AWS Skill Builder: What’s Free and What Costs $29

AWS gives away question sets, prep courses and Cloud Quest, and charges for practice exams and labs. Here is the paywall, product by product, from AWS’s own pages.

AWS Skill Builder is free to use, and its subscription costs $29 a month or $449 a year. The line between them is sharper than most people expect: the free side has question sets and prep courses, the paid side has the official practice exams and the hands-on labs.

This page maps that line using only what AWS publishes, read on 24 September 2026, so you can decide whether to spend anything at all before booking an exam from the AWS certification path.

What is free

AWS’s own pages advertise “1,000+ free learning resources” and “over 900 free self-paced digital courses”. Three exam-preparation products sit explicitly on the free side of its certification prep page.

  • Official Practice Question Sets. AWS’s description: “These 20-question sets, developed by AWS, demonstrate the style of our certification exams.” Twenty questions is not a mock exam, but style is exactly what a first-timer is missing.
  • Exam Prep Courses. “These 2-hour digital courses explore an exam’s topic areas and review sample certification questions for each domain.” One per exam, free.
  • AWS Cloud Quest. Game-based training, and — for Cloud Practitioner only — the free route to recertification three years later.

None of that requires a card. None of it pays this site a commission, which is worth stating on a page whose other links sometimes do.

What the subscription adds

Three things, and they are the three that cost AWS money to run.

  • Official Practice Exams. Full-length, “the same question style and rigor as the certification exam”, listed by AWS under “Available with a subscription”.
  • The enhanced Exam Prep Course. The subscription version includes “6-8 hours of practice materials like videos, hands-on labs, additional practice questions, and access to the Official Practice Exam”.
  • Hands-on labs and the wider lab library, plus AWS Digital Classroom on the annual plan.

AWS prices the Individual subscription at “$29 / month” and “$449 / year” on its training pages, and its certification prep page says subscriptions “start at $29 USD per month”.

When the $29 is obviously worth it

Buy one month, timed to end after your exam, when any of these is true.

You are taking an associate, professional or specialty exam. The full-length official practice exam is the closest thing to a rehearsal, and at $29 against a $150 or $300 retake the maths is not close.

You learn by doing. The labs are the genuinely irreplaceable part. Reading about a VPC and building one are different activities, and the exams increasingly reward the second.

You have failed once. A retake costs the full fee after a 14-day wait, and AWS sets no limit on attempts — which means the cost of a second failure is entirely under your control.

When it is not worth it

A foundational exam. For Cloud Practitioner or AI Practitioner, the free question sets, the free prep course and the free courses are enough for most people. What Cloud Practitioner actually asks is vocabulary and billing, not configuration.

The annual plan for one exam. $449 buys a year of a product you will use for six weeks. Twelve months of Skill Builder makes sense for someone certifying continuously or maintaining certifications through the Skill Builder maintenance route — not for a single pass.

Before you have used the free tier. Every paid recommendation on this page assumes you have already worked through AWS’s free question sets. Most people who buy a subscription first have bought volume, not the thing they were missing.

A note on the annual price

AWS’s training page shows “$449 / year”. Promotional annual prices for Skill Builder circulate online, and one of them is repeated widely enough to look like a list price. None was visible on AWS’s own page on the day we read it, so this site quotes $449 and nothing else.

That is the general rule here: if AWS does not publish it, we do not print it, even when the alternative figure is probably right.

How it compares with paying someone else

Third-party practice-exam libraries such as Whizlabs sell question banks outright, usually for less than a month of Skill Builder, and Udemy sells single courses, often discounted. Instructor-led options from Coursera, Simplilearn, KnowledgeHut and Edureka run from tens to thousands of dollars. Those are partner links, tagged sponsored and nofollow, and they may pay Stackrung a commission.

The distinction worth holding on to: AWS’s own practice exams are written by the people who write the real one, and nobody else’s are. Third-party banks are useful for volume and for a second opinion on wording; they are not equivalent, and any that claim to reproduce real questions are describing a policy violation rather than a product.

What none of it buys

A pass rate, a guarantee, or a salary. AWS publishes no pass rate for any exam, no outcome data for its training, and no salary figures — and the surveys quoted elsewhere come from training companies. The longer argument about what certification is actually worth makes that case in full.

What $29 buys is one month of rehearsal against material written by the examiner. That is a good deal on a $300 exam and an unnecessary one on a $100 exam, and the difference is the whole point of this page.

The cancel-after-one-month question

Buying a month, sitting the exam and cancelling is a normal use of a monthly subscription, not a trick. AWS sells the plan monthly precisely because demand around it is lumpy, and nothing in what it publishes suggests otherwise.

The honest caveat is timing. Start the subscription with roughly a fortnight to go, not three days: the labs are the slow part, and a full-length practice exam is only useful if you leave yourself time to act on what it exposes. Starting too early is the more common waste — a month bought six weeks out is a month spent watching videos with the exam still abstract.

If you expect to certify repeatedly, the arithmetic changes. Four separate months across a year is $116 against $449 for the annual plan, so the annual plan only wins if you would genuinely use it for most of the year, or if you intend to renew certifications through the Skill Builder maintenance route — which requires the subscription to be active at the time.

Skill Builder questions

Is AWS Skill Builder free?
Yes, in part. AWS advertises over 900 free self-paced digital courses, plus free Official Practice Question Sets, free two-hour Exam Prep Courses and free AWS Cloud Quest. The subscription costs $29 a month or $449 a year.
Are the AWS practice exams free?
The 20-question Official Practice Question Sets are free. The full-length Official Practice Exams require a subscription.
Do I need a subscription to pass an AWS exam?
No. Nothing AWS publishes makes a subscription a requirement, and for foundational exams the free material is enough for most candidates.
Does the subscription renew my certification?
Only through the maintenance route, which extends a certification by one year, requires an active paid subscription and opens within 90 days of expiry.
