Cloud Practitioner: $100, ninety minutes, and free recertification
CLF-C02 is the cheapest exam AWS sells and the only one you can renew without paying again. Here is what the exam page says, what the free preparation covers, and the honest answer to whether you should skip it.
On this page
The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam is code CLF-C02, costs $100, runs 90 minutes and asks 65 questions, each either multiple choice or multiple response. AWS delivers it at a “Pearson VUE testing center or online proctored exam”, and the certification lasts three years like every other one.
It is the entry rung of the AWS certification ladder, and the only exam on it with a free renewal route.
What the exam actually asks for
Cloud Practitioner is a vocabulary and billing exam, not a building exam. It covers what the services are for, how AWS charges, where the shared responsibility for security sits, and what the support plans do — the things you need in order to have a sensible conversation about a cloud bill.
That is why it suits people who work near AWS rather than inside it: analysts, project managers, sales engineers, support staff, and developers who have only ever deployed through someone else’s pipeline.
The three free things AWS gives you
AWS publishes more free preparation for this exam than most people use. Three items on its certification prep page are explicitly free of charge.
- Official Practice Question Sets. AWS describes them as “20-question sets, developed by AWS” that “demonstrate the style of our certification exams”. Question style is most of what a first-timer is missing.
- Exam Prep Course. A two-hour digital course that walks the exam’s domains and reviews sample questions for each.
- AWS Cloud Quest. A role-playing game that AWS uses to teach cloud problem-solving, and the same product that renews this certification for nothing three years later.
Add the 900-plus free self-paced digital courses AWS advertises on its training pages and you have, for a foundational exam, enough. None of it pays this site a cent.
What AWS charges for, and whether you need it
The paid side is the AWS Skill Builder subscription: $29 a month, or $449 a year, which is where the Official Practice Exams, the enhanced exam prep course with “6-8 hours of practice materials” and the hands-on labs live.
For CLF-C02 specifically, a monthly subscription taken in the final fortnight before the exam is a defensible $29. A year of it, for one foundational exam, is not. The free tier against the subscription, item by item sets out exactly which product sits on which side of the paywall.
When to skip it entirely
Skip Cloud Practitioner if you already build on AWS for a living. AWS names no certification as a prerequisite for any other, so a working engineer can book Solutions Architect – Associate directly and save $100 and a fortnight.
Take it anyway if one of three things is true: your employer reimburses exams and counts certifications, you want a low-stakes rehearsal of AWS’s testing machinery before committing $150 or $300, or you genuinely are new and want to know whether cloud work interests you before spending months on it.
The renewal detail that makes it unusual
Cloud Practitioner is the only AWS certification with a free recertification path. AWS’s recertification page lists a free “AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner” game-based training as a renewal route for this certification alone; every other exam is renewed by retaking it, by passing something higher, or through paid Skill Builder maintenance activities.
Passing any higher AWS exam also renews it underneath you, which is the route most people take without noticing. Renewal, route by route has the details, including the 50% discount voucher AWS puts in your certification account when you recertify or upgrade.
Two languages are being withdrawn
If you were planning to sit this exam in Italian or German, book before the end of the year: the exam page states that the Italian and German versions will be retired after 31 December 2026. English and the other eleven listed languages — Arabic, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Latin America and Spain), Simplified and Traditional Chinese among them — continue.
What a pass is worth, stated carefully
A pass makes you an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner for three years. It is a vendor certification, not a degree and not an accredited qualification; AWS claims neither on the pages read here.
What it does not come with is a number. AWS publishes no pass rate for this exam, and no salary figure attaches to it from AWS or from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics — the salary surveys you have seen quoted come from training companies. Anyone selling you a course with a specific salary attached is quoting their own marketing back at you.
What the free material actually covers
Worth being specific, because “AWS gives you free training” is vague enough to be useless. For CLF-C02 the free side is: one two-hour Exam Prep Course covering the exam’s topic areas with sample questions per domain; the Official Practice Question Sets, which AWS describes as 20-question sets built to “demonstrate the style of our certification exams”; AWS Cloud Quest; and the broader library of over 900 free self-paced digital courses.
What that does not include is a full-length practice exam, which sits behind the $29-a-month subscription along with the hands-on labs. For a foundational exam that is a genuine choice rather than an obvious purchase — you are buying a rehearsal, and 65 questions in 90 minutes is not a gruelling format to walk into cold.
Booking, rescheduling and results
The exam runs through Pearson VUE, at a test centre or online proctored, and you accept the delivery provider’s terms when you schedule. AWS allows two reschedules before you have to cancel and rebook.
Results reach your AWS Certification Account within five business days of the exam closing, except where they are under review for security or technical reasons. If you fail, you wait 14 calendar days and pay the full $100 again — there is no reduced resit, and no limit on attempts.
Cloud Practitioner questions
How much is the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam?
How hard is CLF-C02?
Can I take an associate exam without it?
Does Cloud Practitioner expire?
Not sure this is the right first exam? The full AWS certification path sets it beside the associate exams and the two other clouds.
