AWS Solutions Architect – Associate: The Default First Exam

SAA-C03 costs $150 for 130 minutes, and its exam page is the only one that tells you newcomers have passed it as a starting point. What that really means.

AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate is code SAA-C03, costs $150, runs 130 minutes and asks 65 questions. It is the most-taken exam on the AWS certification ladder, and for most working engineers it is the right first one.

The reason sits on AWS’s own page, in a sentence the other associate exams do not carry.

The sentence that makes this the beginner’s associate exam

AWS recommends “at least 1 year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services” — and then adds that “candidates with 1-3 years of IT experience have been able to prepare for and earn this certification as a starting point.”

Read that carefully. AWS is telling you that general IT experience, not AWS experience, has been enough for people to start here. No other associate exam page offers that. The data exam asks for two to three years in data engineering; the professional exams ask for two or more years on AWS. This one leaves the door open, and that is why it functions as the default.

What the exam is actually about

Architecture at this level means choosing between services and defending the choice: which storage class, which database, which way to connect two networks, where to put a cache, how to survive the loss of an availability zone, and how to do all of it without spending money the workload does not need.

Questions are scenario-shaped. You are given a situation with a constraint — cost, latency, compliance, recovery time — and four plausible designs, of which one fits the constraint. Knowing what a service does is necessary and not sufficient; the exam turns on knowing which service is the cheapest or fastest way to satisfy a specific condition.

Cloud Practitioner first, or straight here?

Straight here, if you work with AWS. Nothing requires the foundational exam: AWS names no certification as a prerequisite for another, so the $100 and the fortnight are only worth spending if you want a rehearsal of the testing machinery or your employer counts certifications individually.

Start with the foundational exam if the console is genuinely unfamiliar. What Cloud Practitioner covers, and what AWS gives away free for it sets out that decision in full — including the fact that it is the only AWS certification with a free renewal route.

Preparation: free first, paid second

AWS publishes three things for this exam at no cost: the Official Practice Question Sets (“20-question sets, developed by AWS” that “demonstrate the style of our certification exams”), the two-hour Exam Prep Course, and AWS Cloud Quest. Its training pages advertise over 900 free self-paced digital courses alongside them.

The paid tier is AWS Skill Builder at $29 a month or $449 a year, which is where the Official Practice Exams, the enhanced exam-prep course with “6-8 hours of practice materials” and the hands-on labs live. For SAA-C03 the labs are the part with real value, because the exam rewards people who have actually configured a VPC rather than read about one. Free tier against paid subscription, item by item is the detailed comparison.

Outside AWS, a practice-question library such as Whizlabs is the cheapest way to get volume on question style; that is a partner link, tagged sponsored and nofollow, and it may pay Stackrung a commission. Coursera carries AWS-authored courses on subscription, and Simplilearn and KnowledgeHut sell cohort courses at several times the exam fee — also partner links, also sponsored and nofollow, and genuinely optional.

What failing costs, and what it does not

A failure costs $150 and 14 calendar days. AWS’s policy is explicit: you must wait 14 calendar days before retaking, and “you must pay the full registration fee for each exam attempt”. There is no cap on attempts and no discounted resit.

It does not cost you anything else. There is no record anyone else sees, no penalty on a future attempt and no waiting period beyond the fortnight. Results reach your AWS Certification Account within five business days of the exam closing.

The version question, and why it matters here

SAA-C03 is the current version and AWS has published no retirement date for it. That is worth noting because two of its neighbours are changing: registration for the next Solutions Architect – Professional version, SAP-C03, opens on 27 October 2026 with SAP-C02 retiring on 16 November 2026, and the Developer – Associate exam moves from DVA-C02 to DVA-C03 on 1 December 2026.

If the professional exam is your medium-term goal, that timing matters more than it looks. How the whole path fits together, including which exams AWS has dated for retirement, keeps the calendar in one place.

After the pass

The certification lasts three years. Passing any higher-level AWS exam renews it underneath you, AWS puts a 50% discount voucher in your certification account when you recertify or upgrade, and the Skill Builder maintenance route can extend a certification by a year — with a paid subscription, inside the last 90 days. Renewal, route by route covers each one.

What the pass does not come with is a number attached to your earnings. AWS publishes no pass rate and no salary data; the salary surveys attached to this exam in search results are published by training companies. This site quotes neither.

The last fortnight, if you want a method

This is opinion rather than sourced fact, and it is how we would spend the two weeks before SAA-C03.

Start with AWS’s free 20-question practice set to calibrate. Whatever score comes back, read the explanation for every question, including the ones you got right — the exam tests why an answer is better, not whether it works. Then work through the exam guide domain by domain, and for each one build or configure the central service once, however small: a single-page static site behind a CDN, a small database with a read replica, a VPC with a private subnet that can still reach the internet.

In the final week, sit one full-length practice exam under timed conditions, which means the $29 month of AWS Skill Builder if you are going to spend anything at all. Then spend the remaining days exclusively on the domains that exam exposed, rather than re-reading what you already know — the comfortable material is where revision time goes to die.

The cost of the wrong associate exam

There are five associate exams and they cost $150 each, which makes choosing wrong an expensive mistake rather than a cheap one. The architect exam is the broadest and the most forgiving of general IT experience; the others are narrower and assume the job title.

If you write application code all day, Developer – Associate matches your week better — and note its version change: DVA-C02 retires on 30 November 2026, with DVA-C03 generally available the following day. If you move data, Data Engineer – Associate asks for more specific experience and rewards it. If you keep systems running, CloudOps Engineer – Associate is the renamed SysOps exam and is aimed squarely at you.

Booking and results

Pearson VUE delivers the exam, at a test centre or online proctored. You may reschedule twice before having to cancel and rebook, and final results are posted to your AWS Certification Account within five business days of the exam closing, unless they are held for security or technical review.

There is no waiting period before your first attempt and no application to approve — you book, you pay $150, you sit it. That is a genuine difference from certifications in other fields, where eligibility review comes first, and it is the reason AWS’s “recommended experience” wording does so much work on these pages.

SAA-C03 questions people ask first

How much is the AWS Solutions Architect – Associate exam?
$150 for one attempt, from AWS’s own exam page read on 24 September 2026. A retake is the full fee again after a 14-day wait.
Can I take it without Cloud Practitioner?
Yes. AWS lists recommended experience, not prerequisites, and this exam’s page says candidates with one to three years of IT experience have earned it as a starting point.
How many questions, and how long?
65 questions in 130 minutes, each multiple choice or multiple response.
What passing score do I need?
AWS does not print a passing score on the SAA-C03 page. The only passing score published on an AWS source we could find is 720 out of 1,000, and that is for the forthcoming DVA-C03 developer exam — not this one.

This guide sits on one rung. The whole AWS certification path, level by level shows where it falls, what the next exam costs, and which exams AWS has dated for retirement. Exam facts here come from AWS’s own pages on 24 September 2026; check the exam page again before you pay, because versions and prices change.
