AWS DevOps Engineer – Professional: $300 and Three Hours
DOP-C02 is one of three professional exams, all priced at $300 for 180 minutes and 75 questions. What AWS expects, and why this one is rarely a first certification.
AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional is code DOP-C02, costs $300, runs 180 minutes and asks 75 questions. AWS recommends “2 or more years of experience in provisioning, operating, and managing AWS environments”, plus software development lifecycle background and programming or scripting ability.
It sits on the professional rung of the AWS certification ladder, beside Solutions Architect – Professional and the newer Generative AI Developer – Professional. All three cost the same and run the same three hours.
What three hours of professional exam feels like
Seventy-five questions in 180 minutes gives you 2.4 minutes each, and professional questions are long. The scenarios carry more constraints than associate ones — a deployment strategy plus a compliance requirement plus a rollback expectation plus a cost ceiling — and several plausible answers differ only in one clause.
The practical consequence is that time management is part of the exam. Candidates who pass associate exams comfortably and then fail a professional one usually report running out of clock, not running out of knowledge.
What it actually covers
DevOps at this level means the full delivery pipeline on AWS: how code gets built, tested, deployed and rolled back; how infrastructure is defined and changed safely; how systems are monitored and how incidents surface; how logging, metrics and events are wired together; and how security and compliance controls survive contact with continuous delivery.
If your job title says SRE, platform engineer or DevOps engineer, this is the exam that matches it. If your job is designing systems rather than running them, Solutions Architect – Professional is the closer fit — and note that its next version, SAP-C03, opens for registration on 27 October 2026 while SAP-C02 retires on 16 November 2026. DOP-C02, by contrast, has no published retirement date, which makes study material bought for it a safer purchase this quarter.
Which associate exam should come first
None is required — AWS names no prerequisite certification for any exam. But the professional exams assume the associate ground, and most people who pass them have covered it somewhere.
The natural feeder is either Solutions Architect – Associate, for the breadth, or CloudOps Engineer – Associate, for the operational focus. That second exam is code SOA-C03 and is the one AWS renamed: its page says it was “formerly known as AWS Certified SysOps Administrator - Associate”, and that the new name applies only to people who pass SOA-C03 — it “won’t be retroactively changed” for existing holders. Its Simplified Chinese and Korean versions retire after 19 November 2026.
The cost of getting it wrong
$300, then 14 calendar days, then $300 again. AWS’s retake policy applies at every level: full registration fee per attempt, no cap on attempts, and results within five business days.
At professional level that rule reshapes how you should spend on preparation. One failed attempt is worth ten months of an AWS Skill Builder subscription at $29 a month, or a large stack of third-party question banks. This is the rung where paying for practice exams is easiest to justify — the free and paid AWS preparation compared sets out exactly what the subscription adds.
Preparation that suits this exam
AWS’s free tier still matters: the Official Practice Question Sets show the question style, and the two-hour Exam Prep Course maps the domains. For a professional exam, though, the free sets are a fraction of what you need.
What tends to work is time on the thing itself — building a pipeline, breaking it, and fixing it — plus enough practice questions to learn the exam’s rhythm. Paid libraries such as Whizlabs sell professional-level sets cheaply, and instructor-led courses from Simplilearn, KnowledgeHut or Edureka cost several times the exam and suit people whose employer is paying. Those are partner links, tagged sponsored and nofollow, and they may pay Stackrung a commission; AWS’s own free material comes first and pays us nothing.
What does not work, whatever the forums say, is a question dump. AWS’s published position is that accessing real exam content “violates the AWS Certification Program Agreement”, and its sanctions include invalidating results after a certification has been issued and revoking certifications already earned. At professional level you would be risking the associate credentials you already hold.
Renewal, and the useful side effect
Professional certifications expire after three years like everything else. The side effect worth planning around is that passing a professional exam renews the associate certifications underneath it, because AWS counts passing a higher-level exam as a renewal action.
So a candidate who takes an associate exam in year one and a professional in year two has, without doing anything extra, reset the clock on both. AWS also puts a 50% discount voucher in your certification account when you recertify or upgrade. How the renewal routes actually work goes through each in detail.
Should you take it?
Take it if you already run delivery on AWS and want the credential that says so at the level above associate. Wait if you have less than the two years AWS recommends, because at $300 a failed attempt is an expensive way to learn that the questions assume operational scars.
And take it for the syllabus if nothing else: the exam guide is a fair description of what AWS thinks a competent platform engineer knows, which makes it a better self-study curriculum than most.
Booking, rescheduling and the day itself
AWS delivers its exams through Pearson VUE, either at a test centre or online proctored, and you agree to the delivery provider’s terms when you schedule. The mechanics are worth knowing before you commit $300.
You can reschedule an exam twice. AWS’s before-testing policy says a third change means cancelling and booking again, which at professional level is a real constraint if your work calendar is volatile — book later than feels comfortable rather than earlier.
Results are not instant in the way candidates sometimes expect. AWS’s after-testing policy says final results are posted to your AWS Certification Account “within five business days after the close of the exam”, with an exception when results are under review for security or technical reasons. For exams scored on a scale, you can view, download or print the report from the Exam History tab.
If you fail, the rule is the same at every level: 14 calendar days before you can retake, and the full registration fee again, with no limit on attempts.
What three hours does to preparation
The format changes what good preparation looks like. For an associate exam, knowing the services is most of the battle. For a three-hour professional exam, stamina and pacing are a measurable part of the result, and the only way to rehearse them is to sit something full length.
That is the strongest argument for the AWS Skill Builder subscription at this level: the Official Practice Exams behind the $29-a-month paywall are the only full-length rehearsals written by the people who write the real thing. Twenty-question free sets tell you about wording; they tell you nothing about what your concentration does at minute 140.
Three professional exams, one price
AWS now runs three exams at professional level, all at $300 for 180 minutes and 75 questions: this one, Solutions Architect – Professional, and the newer Generative AI Developer – Professional, code AIP-C01, aimed at developers building production generative-AI systems on AWS.
The pricing tells you AWS considers them equivalent in depth rather than in sequence. There is no order you must take them in and no prerequisite between them, so the choice is simply which describes your week. If the answer is “none of them yet”, the associate rung is where the useful work happens — and the architect associate exam is the broadest starting point.
DevOps Professional questions
How much is the AWS DevOps Engineer – Professional exam?
Do I need an associate certification first?
How does it compare with Solutions Architect – Professional?
Does passing it renew my other AWS certifications?
This guide sits on one rung. The whole AWS certification path, level by level shows where it falls, what the next exam costs, and which exams AWS has dated for retirement. Exam facts here come from AWS’s own pages on 24 September 2026; check the exam page again before you pay, because versions and prices change.
