The AWS certification path, and which rung to step on
Four levels, three standard prices, thirteen bookable exams and a retirement calendar AWS has already published. Here is the whole ladder as AWS publishes it — plus the honest version of “which one first”, which depends less on your ambition than on how much of the console you have actually touched.

On this page
AWS sells four levels of certification and prices them at three points: $100 at foundational level, $150 at associate, $300 at professional and specialty. Everything else you have read about what AWS certification costs is training, and training is optional.
This page lays out the ladder as AWS’s own exam pages describe it, read on 24 September 2026, and then answers the question people actually arrive with: where do I start, and can I skip a rung?
The ladder, as AWS publishes it
Thirteen exams are open for booking today: twelve spread over four levels, plus one business-track beta. The fee, the clock and the question count come from each exam’s own page.

Every live AWS certification exam, read from its own page on aws.amazon.com on 24 September 2026. Beta prices are temporary by definition.
Two things in that table deserve a second look. The AI Business Strategist exam is in beta, and AWS prints both figures on its page: $50 now, with the standard price given as 100 USD. And Advanced Networking has a closing date — AWS says the last day to take it is 31 December 2026.
There is no prerequisite. There is a recommendation
You can book any AWS exam without holding any other. Not one AWS exam page read on 24 September 2026 lists a certification you must already have; what each page lists is recommended experience, which is a different promise entirely.
The recommendations are worth reading because they are unusually specific. Solutions Architect – Associate asks for “at least 1 year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services”, and then adds, on the same page, that “candidates with 1-3 years of IT experience have been able to prepare for and earn this certification as a starting point”. Data Engineer – Associate asks for the equivalent of two to three years in data engineering plus one to two years on AWS. Security – Specialty asks for five years of IT security experience and two or more years securing AWS workloads.
Read those as a rough map of how much unfamiliar ground you will be covering, not as a gate. The gate is the exam.
Which rung to step on
Three honest starting points, depending on which one describes you.
You have never opened the console
Start at $100 with the Cloud Practitioner exam, which this site covers end to end. Ninety minutes, 65 questions, and it is the only AWS certification with a free recertification route, which tells you something about who AWS thinks takes it.
You build on AWS at work but have no certificate
Skip the foundational rung and book an associate exam. Choose it by the job you do rather than by reputation: architects and generalists take Solutions Architect – Associate, people who write the code take Developer, people who run the systems take CloudOps, and people who move data take Data Engineer – Associate.
You want the AI credential everyone is asking about
AWS now runs three AI-related exams at three different levels — AI Practitioner at $100, Machine Learning Engineer – Associate at $150, and Generative AI Developer – Professional at $300 — plus the AI Business Strategist beta for people who buy AI rather than build it. The AI Practitioner exam is the cheap way in, and AWS suggests newcomers to IT do Cloud Practitioner Essentials or Technical Essentials before sitting it.
What the path really costs
The exam fees are the only prices AWS fixes. Stacked end to end, a foundational plus an associate plus a professional exam is $550 at list price, once, if you pass each on the first attempt.
A failed attempt is the expensive part. AWS makes you wait 14 calendar days before you can retake, and you “must pay the full registration fee for each exam attempt” — there is no discounted resit. There is also no limit on attempts, which is generous and costly in equal measure. The full cost breakdown, including what preparation adds, takes this further.
Where the preparation is free
AWS gives away more preparation than most candidates use. Its own pages advertise “1,000+ free learning resources” and over 900 free self-paced digital courses, and on the certification prep page three things are explicitly free: the Official Practice Question Sets — “These 20-question sets, developed by AWS, demonstrate the style of our certification exams” — the two-hour Exam Prep Courses, and AWS Cloud Quest.
What AWS charges for is the Official Practice Exams, the enhanced exam prep course with its “6-8 hours of practice materials”, and the hands-on labs. That is the AWS Skill Builder subscription: $29 a month, or $449 a year with Digital Classroom included. Those figures are from AWS’s own training page, read on 24 September 2026. None of it pays this site anything, and for a foundational exam most people do not need any of it — we compare the free tier against the subscription in detail.
Whizlabs and paid practice exams
If you want more question banks than AWS’s free sets provide, third-party practice-exam libraries such as Whizlabs sell them cheaply, and they are the one category of paid preparation that earns its keep for most candidates: unlimited repetition on question style is what turns a shaky pass into a comfortable one. That is a partner link, tagged sponsored and nofollow, and it may pay Stackrung a commission; the price you see on the day is the price, and this category discounts constantly. AWS’s own free question sets come first, and they pay us nothing.
Paid placement: this button is a partner link, tagged sponsored and nofollow, and it may pay Stackrung a commission. It earns nothing on the exam itself — AWS sells that directly and pays no commission to anyone. Check the current price on the provider’s own page before you buy; training prices here move faster than exam fees do.
Coursera, Simplilearn, KnowledgeHut and instructor-led courses
Instructor-led cloud courses cost hundreds to low thousands of dollars, and they are a reasonable purchase for exactly one kind of person: someone whose employer is paying and who learns badly alone. Coursera hosts AWS-authored material as subscriptions; Simplilearn, KnowledgeHut and Edureka sell cohort-based certification courses; Udemy sells single courses outright. Those five are partner links, tagged sponsored and nofollow, and they may pay Stackrung a commission — which is exactly why this section sits below the free one rather than above it. None of them is required, none of them can promise you a pass, and each of them costs several times the exam.
The exams AWS has dated for retirement
Five dates matter before you book anything, and all five come from AWS’s own pages or its Training and Certification blog. Machine Learning – Specialty closed on 31 March 2026. Advanced Networking – Specialty closes on 31 December 2026. The Developer and Solutions Architect – Professional exams both roll to new versions in late 2026: registration for SAP-C03 and DVA-C03 opens 27 October 2026, SAP-C02 retires 16 November 2026 and DVA-C02 retires 30 November 2026.
Booking a version weeks before it retires is not a mistake — your certification still lasts three years from the day you earn it — but the study material you buy for the old version becomes waste paper on the changeover date, which is the real argument for waiting.
Renewal: three years, then a decision
Every AWS certification expires three years after you earn it. AWS’s FAQ puts it plainly: “You will be required to update your certification (or recertify) every three years.”
Three renewal routes exist. Retake the current version of the same exam; pass a higher-level exam, which renews the lower one underneath it; or, for Cloud Practitioner only, complete the free AWS Cloud Quest recertification, which costs nothing. There is also a 50% discount voucher in your AWS Certification Account when you recertify or upgrade, and a maintenance route that extends a certification by one year through Skill Builder activities — that one requires an active paid subscription and only opens within 90 days of expiry. What renewal actually involves, route by route, goes through each.
The things this page will not tell you
It will not tell you the pass rate, because AWS does not publish one. It will not tell you what an AWS certification pays, because the salary surveys quoted everywhere are published by training vendors rather than by AWS or the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. And it will not point you at a question dump.
That last one is not squeamishness. AWS’s own security post from 25 June 2025 says sharing exam questions or answers “is strictly prohibited” and that “Accessing these materials, even unintentionally, violates the AWS Certification Program Agreement”. The published sanctions run from a warning through invalidating your results “even after a certification has been issued” to revoking certifications and, for proxy testing, a permanent ban from the programme. A dump does not risk your exam fee. It risks the credential you already own.
Booking, rescheduling and results
AWS delivers its exams through Pearson VUE, either at a testing centre or online proctored, and you accept the delivery provider’s terms when you schedule. Three procedural facts are worth knowing before you pay.
You can reschedule an exam twice; AWS’s before-testing policy says a third change means cancelling and booking again. Final results are posted to your AWS Certification Account “within five business days after the close of the exam”, except when they are under review for security or technical reasons — so a provisional result on screen is not the end of the process. And for exams scored on a scale, you can view, download or print the report from the Exam History tab of your account.
AWS does not publish a passing score on most exam pages. The one figure we found on an AWS source is 720 out of 1,000, given in its September 2026 announcement for the forthcoming DVA-C03 developer exam. No other passing score appears on this site, because no other is published.
Three paths people actually take
Not a recommendation, just the three shapes that recur, with the fees from this page attached.
- The reimbursed route. Cloud Practitioner at $100 because the employer counts it, then an associate at $150 when the budget renews. Total $250, employer-funded, and the three-year clocks are staggered.
- The working engineer’s route. Straight to an associate exam at $150, then a professional at $300 a year or two later — which renews the associate underneath it at the same time. Total $450, one credential always current.
- The specialist’s route. An associate exam at $150 to cover the breadth, then Security – Specialty at $300 for the depth, with the 50% recertification voucher used on whichever comes up for renewal first.
Every figure there is arithmetic on prices already on this page. What none of those routes includes is the year or more of hands-on experience AWS recommends at associate level — which remains the part of the ladder you cannot buy.
